Job Description

BACKGROUND

When President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded People to People in 1956, he believed that young people meeting each other face-to-face was the key to fostering a peaceful, global community. During the past 50 years over 250,000 young Americans have visited 35 countries around the world. During summer 2007 you too can be part of Eisenhower’s vision by working as a Delegation Manager escorting cultural activity programmes around the United Kingdom, Ireland and northern Europe from June to August.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

To effectively co-ordinate the day-to-day running of the 14- or 20-day pre-booked programmes (known as Delegations) for groups of 35 - 45 American schoolchildren (known as Student Ambassadors or Delegates) aged 10 to 18 years. Up to 4 Delegation Leaders (usually qualified teachers) will accompany you as you travel around the United Kingdom, Ireland and northern Europe during summer 2007. Please note programmes only operate from June through to August.

MAIN DUTIES

Duties include, but are not limited to:

·         Liaising professionally and courteously at all times with Delegation Leaders, students, coach drivers, hotel reception staff, professional guides, home stay co-ordinators, event co-ordinators and any groups of people involved in the organisation of the programmes.

·         Using initiative and paying attention to detail throughout the duration of the programmes. Delegation Managers are expected to solve minor difficulties themselves but know when to refer a query or incident to the head office in London.

·         Maintaining high standards of personal appearance, punctuality and leading the delegates by example.

·         Generating a positive, ‘can-do’ atmosphere for the students and leaders when difficulties or schedule changes arise and encouraging good morale within the group.

·         Where possible providing delegations with interesting and informative comments on historical sites, landmarks and cities during coach journeys (training and resource material is provided).

·         Generating anticipation and interest in professional guided tours, pre-arranged briefings (e.g. MP lectures at the Houses of Parliament) and all elements of the programmes.

·         Fostering awareness of the different cultures and lifestyles of the people whose countries the delegations will visit.

·         Completing general paperwork and evaluations relating to the running of the programmes.

TRAINING

Candidates must be available to attend a training programme. This usually takes place around Easter during the university holiday period and comprises 5 - 6 days residential course work and workshops including travel to UK and / or European locations for familiarisation. All expenses are met by the company.

REMUNERATION

Delegation Managers are paid a competitive weekly salary plus all travel and incidental expenses are covered.
